Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock Receives Federal Grant to Mentor Children of Prisoners

On October 1, 2007, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock received a Mentoring Children of Prisoners federal grant through the Administration on Children, Youth and Families’ Mentoring Children of Prisoners Grant Program in the amount of $100,000 per year for three years. This grant will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock to reach out to the growing need of children left behind when a parent(s) are incarcerated.

AMACHI-Texas

On February 27,2006, Governor Rick Perry announced the Amachi-Texas program that will match 1,300 children that have a parent incarcerated with a mentor across Texas.  With a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sister of Texas, which includes the North Texas area (Dallas, Ft. Worth, Paris, Denton, & Arlington), Abilene, Lubbock, Midland, Amarillo, Hereford, South Texas area (San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, & McAllen), Austin, El Paso, Houston, and Galveston agencies; the Governor's office, One Star Foundation, the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice, and the Amachi program. 

Amachi is a Nigerian Ibo word meaning
 "Who knows what God has brought us through this Child."

The AMACHI-TEXAS Mission

The Amachi Texas mission is to stop the inter-generational cycle of crime and incarcerations by providing and facilitating one-to-one mentoring relationships between an at risk child and caring adult.

CHILDREN of INCARCERATED PARENTS:

Children of prisoners are 5 TIMES more likely to commit a violent crime.

Without intervention, 70% of the children of prisoners will follow their parents into prison themselves.

58% of the children of prisoners are under 10 years of age!*
